Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is a full remake of the 1996 Tomb Raider in Unreal Engine 5, by Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog for Amazon Game Studios, out Feb 12, 2027. Lara hunts the Scion through Peru, Greece, Egypt and Atlantis with modern traversal, combat, puzzles and creatures.

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is a full reimagining of the 1996 Tomb Raider, built in Unreal Engine 5 by Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog and published by Amazon Game Studios, out on Feb 12, 2027 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC. It keeps the original's story and route: Lara Croft hunts the three pieces of the Scion across Peru, Greece, Egypt and a Mediterranean island that holds Atlantis. Around that route it rebuilds almost everything else, with open, semi-connected spaces, the Survivor trilogy's climbing, a grapple, a dodge-based shooter, crafting, a skill tree, separate difficulty for puzzles and combat, and new puzzles and creatures. Everything below comes from the makers, the trailers and press previews of pre-release builds, as of Nov 2, 2026; nobody outside the studios has played the finished game. The clip is IGN's Jun 2026 first preview, from a pre-release demo.

What is Legacy of Atlantis?

It is the second remake of Lara Croft's first adventure, after Tomb Raider: Anniversary in 2007, and the first Tomb Raider made in Unreal Engine 5, leaving Crystal Dynamics' own Foundation engine that Rise and Shadow used. Amazon Game Studios and Crystal Dynamics revealed it, as a modern reimagining of the 1996 debut, at The Game Awards on Dec 11, 2025, beside Tomb Raider: Catalyst. Crystal Dynamics' Noah Hughes tied it to the series' 30th anniversary in 2026. The date, Feb 12, 2027, came at Sony's State of Play on Jun 2, 2026; see Legacy of Atlantis Release Date.

It is not a remaster. Tomb Raider I-III Remastered keeps the 1996 game and lays new graphics over it; Legacy of Atlantis is a new game on the old map. Will Kerslake of Crystal Dynamics put the aim as adjusting the game for modern player tastes.

Who is making it?

Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog, with Amazon Game Studios publishing under a license from the Crystal Dynamics group, a deal from 2022. How the work divides is described differently. Steam's legal line says developed by Crystal Dynamics, the official FAQ says developed in partnership between the two, and Kotaku reported that Flying Wild Hog develops it with guidance from Crystal Dynamics. No official source says which studio builds which levels, and staff from both talk about every region.

Flying Wild Hog is the Polish studio behind Hard Reset and Shadow Warrior; its CEO Michał Szustak called the game one of the studio's most significant undertakings. The named leads at Crystal Dynamics are Raul Siqueira (Game Director), Jason Epps (Design Director), Jeff Adams (Experience Director) and John Stafford (Narrative Director); at Flying Wild Hog they include creative director Michał Kuk and Lead Gameplay Designer Bartek Schweiger. Kam Yu, who sculpted Lara, has built three generations of her. The studios' histories are on Crystal Dynamics.

Story and timeline

Lara hunts the scattered pieces of the Scion, an artifact of immeasurable power, in a story the makers say is expanded with deeper links to her future. Jacqueline Natla, played by Adrienne Wilkinson and now chief executive of Natla Technologies, tries to recruit Lara, is refused and underestimates her. Larson Conway, played by Bradley Snedeker, is Natla's mercenary and the first person Lara meets in the hunt; he plans to betray her with his partner Pierre Dupont. In Peru, Qualopec is now an Atlantean who helped the Inca and later controlled the dinosaurs, and Stafford says Greece is where Lara starts to see the bigger picture. The characters are on Jacqueline Natla, Larson Conway and Tomb Raider Characters, and the artifact on The Scion.

The game sits in Crystal Dynamics' unified timeline after the Survivor trilogy, so this is the same Lara from those games, with more adventures behind her, and the 1996 game and Anniversary leave the canon, as Kotaku explains. Her mentor Conrad Roth gave her the twin pistols. Siqueira's north star was Lara at the top of her game.

Lara's design and voice

Lara wears a teal tank top and shorts, with a braid, two holsters, Survivor-era wisps of hair, a jade necklace and an ice axe, and the makers say returning players will feel the Legend-era Lara most strongly. Her clothes were scanned from real garments on a 3D-printed body. Alix Wilton Regan, of Cyberpunk 2077 and Dragon Age: Inquisition, voices her in this game and in Catalyst, taking over from Camilla Luddington. See Lara Croft and Lara Croft Voice Actors.

Regions and levels

The four regions are the 1996 game's: Peru, Greece, Egypt and a mysterious Mediterranean island shrouded in myth. The full level list has not been published as of Nov 2, 2026. What has been shown:

Region Shown so far 1996 levels there
Peru Mountain Caves, the City of Vilcabamba, the Lost Valley, the Tomb of Qualopec Caves, City of Vilcabamba, The Lost Valley, Tomb of Qualopec
Greece St. Francis' Folly and its four champions' chambers, including the Sword of Damocles St. Francis' Folly, Colosseum, Palace Midas, Cistern, Tomb of Tihocan
Egypt The city of Kamun in caves and canyons, a temple to Anubis, the Osiris trial City of Khamoon, Obelisk of Khamoon, Sanctuary of the Scion
The island Nothing yet Natla's Mines, Atlantis Level, The Great Pyramid

Peru opens in snow, with an ice slide early on, before warm jungle, and adds scannable documents and carvings closer to Inca culture. Greece is more vertical and connected, and at St. Francis' Folly the player chooses which of the four tombs to take first. Epps calls Egypt the most intellectually challenging of the regions, and there Lara finds that robbers got to the tombs first. The official text spells the Egyptian city Kamun, while image files on the same site say Temple of Khamoon, the 1996 spelling. In-world fiction on the official site also places Lara in San Francisco and London between regions; whether those are playable is not known.

Structure

Where the 1996 game led from one self-contained room to the next, the remake opens those spaces into semi-connected environments that can be explored and approached from new angles. The makers describe it as semi-connected, not as an open world; Kotaku has described Catalyst as the game taking the series toward a more open-world format. All of the 1996 secrets return, and many new ones are added, and secrets and relics now reward outfits. How the original's secrets work is on Secrets.

Traversal

Lara's base moves are jumping, sprinting, climbing and the wall scramble, a mix of the original's moves and the Survivor trilogy's. New is a grapple tool that pulls objects, solves puzzles and lets her climb and rappel. Long gaps need a sprint first and end in a saving grab, and surfaces carry markings and spots of color to guide the eye. On PS5 the June demo used X to jump and grab, Triangle for the grapple and Circle to dive and dodge, as the PlayStation Blog listed. The 1996 game's tank controls are on Controls and Movement.

Combat

Epps describes the game as built as a modern third-person shooter, with aim assist and target snapping, while Siqueira says it is not a cover shooter. Dodging builds Focus, and spending it sets off an acrobatic move in slow motion; on PS5, R2 fires, L2 tightens aim and R1 spends Focus. Beyond the twin pistols, other weapons, starting with the shotgun in Greece, are found in the world and can be upgraded in rate of fire and accuracy. Epps says a player can keep to the pistols the entire way. New enemies are Natla's human mercenaries, met in the order assault rifles, shotguns, then sniper rifles. The 1996 arsenal is on Weapons.

Progression and crafting

A skill tree spends points on traversal, combat or survivability; one skill shown raises fire rate by 10 percent. Crafting replaces medipacks found lying about: herbs become healing tonics and balms, and dishes give buffs, such as an Explorer's Stew that lowers trap damage. Siqueira's reason is that a medbag in a sealed temple breaks the spell. Both systems come from the Survivor trilogy and drew a negative reaction from many fans when they were revealed in August 2026.

Puzzles and hints

Siqueira says puzzles are at the core of the game, and that good ones took 6 to 8 revisions and hard ones 10 to 12. The kinds named include a waterfall traversal puzzle on the way to Qualopec's tomb, light beams, a quipu (knotted cord) puzzle rebuilt with levers, and the cog puzzle of the Lost Valley; the Steam page adds water flow, pressure plates and symbols. Hints come from Lara's remarks and an optional 3D laser scanner that also reads lore from statues and relics, and players can raise the guidance and set puzzle and combat difficulty separately. Epps's stated aim is that players never get stuck. The clip is GameRiot's report from the hands-off Gamescom demo.

Creatures

Peru brings back wolves, bats, bears, velociraptors and the T. rex. The T. rex is now a chase across the level, where Epps says simply shooting it will not work, the raptors have feathers that come off as they are hurt, and packs change behavior as they shrink, the last animal going berserk. Greece adds a leopard that hides in shadows and grass and crocodiles that move between land and water. Egypt is the turning point toward the supernatural: cat mummies that crawl, throw fire and explode, a mummy from a fallen sarcophagus, flying creatures and hybrid mythic beasts. No boss beyond the T. rex has been named, and centaurs have only been hinted at. The 1996 bestiary is on Enemies.

What the previews say

Hands-on previews from June 2026 found a mix of modern design and old-school feel, with a slightly floaty jump, flimsy gunplay and spaces that were hard to read for what can be climbed; the Gamescom previews in September praised smarter enemies and doubted the scanner and crafting. All of them saw early builds. The outlets, dates and builds are on Legacy of Atlantis Previews, and the full list of changes on What's New in Legacy of Atlantis. The Steam page's notice that AI-assisted tools were used during development is covered on Generative AI in Legacy of Atlantis.

What is not known yet

As of Nov 2, 2026, the makers have not published the full level list, whether the 1996 levels Natla's Mines, Atlantis and The Great Pyramid return, anything of the island, bosses other than the T. rex, whether Croft Manor returns as Lara's Home did in 1996, difficulty mode names, performance targets, a demo, or a review embargo. Editions and prices are on Legacy of Atlantis Editions and Price, and platforms and PC specs on Legacy of Atlantis Platforms and PC Requirements.
