Weapons

The 1996 Tomb Raider has four weapons: the pistols with unlimited ammo, the shotgun, the magnums and the Uzis, each found in more than one level. Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis keeps the dual pistols and adds weapons found in the world that can be upgraded.

The 1996 Tomb Raider has four weapons: Lara's twin pistols, which have unlimited ammunition, then the shotgun from The Lost Valley, the magnums from a secret in Colosseum and the Uzis from the secret in Sanctuary of the Scion, all three needing ammunition found in the levels. Stella's Tomb Raider Site notes that every weapon can be found in more than one place, so one missed is never lost for good. In Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, out Feb 12, 2027, the dual pistols return as "the only weapons that are truly Lara's", alongside other weapons she finds and upgrades.

Pistols. Lara draws one in each hand and never runs out, so they are what most fights use. Josh Strife Plays' clips on this page show the 1996 PlayStation version.

Shotgun. The heavy hitter of the four; Stella reaches for it against mummies and the first Atlantean mutants. Shells come only two to a box, so they run out fast.

Magnums. The magnums count as one item per pickup before Lara owns them, then as rounds, which is why the ammunition total jumps when she picks them up. Pierre carries a pair, and Lara takes them when she kills him in Tomb of Tihocan. Stella recommends them to finish Natla in The Great Pyramid.

Uzis. Rapid fire, arriving in time for the Atlantis levels. Clips found before the Uzis themselves pile up: ten such pickups become 500 rounds once Lara has the guns. Against the Torso, Stella's estimate is about 800 Uzi rounds.

GameSpot's Saturn review of the time summed up the arsenal as pistols (one in each hand), shotgun, or Uzi. The game has no vehicles; they arrive in Tomb Raider 2.

How does aiming work in 1996?

Draw the weapons (Space Bar on PC) and Action fires; Lara locks onto an enemy in front of her, and the player keeps control of her feet. That leaves the player free to keep moving, and the classic advice is to keep jumping: backflips and side flips while firing, which is how Stella fights the Cowboy, the Skater Boy and Natla. Tomb Raider I-III Remastered adds boss health bars. More on Controls and Movement.

Natla's Mines: the weapons taken away

Natla's Mines starts with no weapons at all, and Lara wins them back one by one: the pistols from a building lowered by three fuses, the magnums from the Cowboy, the Uzis from the Skater Boy, and a shotgun from a secret or from the bald henchman outside the pyramid.

Frequently asked questions

What weapons are in Tomb Raider 1? Tomb Raider (1996) has four weapons: the pistols (unlimited ammo), the shotgun, the magnums and the Uzis.

Where do you get the shotgun in Tomb Raider? In Tomb Raider (1996), the shotgun is first found in The Lost Valley, among bones on a ledge across the first bridge. Missed it? It is also in secrets in Tomb of Qualopec and St. Francis' Folly, and in the Cistern.

Where are the magnums in Tomb Raider 1? The magnums are first found in a secret in Colosseum. If you miss them, Tomb Raider gives you more chances: a secret in Palace Midas, the Cistern, Pierre in Tomb of Tihocan, and later levels in Egypt.

Where are the Uzis in Tomb Raider 1? The Uzis are the one secret of Sanctuary of the Scion, on an invisible platform beside the sphinx. Otherwise Tomb Raider hands them over when Lara beats the Skater Boy in Natla's Mines.

Do the pistols have unlimited ammo in Tomb Raider? Yes. Lara's dual pistols have unlimited ammunition in the first five Tomb Raider games, per Crystal Dynamics; every other weapon needs ammunition found in the levels.

Can you finish Legacy of Atlantis with only the pistols? Design director Jason Epps says players can use the dual pistols the entire way in Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis. That is a pre-release statement; the game is out Feb 12, 2027.

What weapons are in Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis? As of Nov 2, 2026, Legacy of Atlantis has shown the dual pistols and a shotgun, with more unlockable weapons promised and upgrades to rate of fire and accuracy. The full list is not published.
