Tomb Raider Films

There are three Tomb Raider films, Lara Croft Tomb Raider (2001) and The Cradle of Life (2003) with Angelina Jolie, and Tomb Raider (2018) with Alicia Vikander. A Vikander sequel was dropped in 2022, and no new film is announced as of Nov 2, 2026; Lara's next screen outing is Amazon's TV series.

Three Tomb Raider films have been released: Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001) and Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life (2003), both starring Angelina Jolie for Paramount, and Tomb Raider (2018), starring Alicia Vikander for Warner Bros. The 2018 film took the most worldwide, $275.0 million, a hair ahead of the 2001 film's $274.7 million, but the 2001 film earned more than twice as much in the US. A sequel to the 2018 film, with Misha Green set to direct, fell apart when MGM lost the rights in 2022, and no new Tomb Raider film is announced as of Nov 2, 2026. Lara's next live-action role is Sophie Turner's, in Amazon's Tomb Raider TV Series.

Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001)

Simon West directed Angelina Jolie as Lara, with Jon Voight as Lord Richard Croft. Paramount released it on Jun 15, 2001, and it took $131.2 million in the US and $274.7 million worldwide on a $115 million budget. Like its sequel, it tells an original story rather than adapting one of the games.

Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life (2003)

Jan de Bont directed the sequel, with Jolie returning and Gerard Butler beside her. It opened in the US on Jul 25, 2003, a month after The Angel of Darkness came out, and earned $160.1 million worldwide on a $95 million budget, well below the first film. No third Jolie film followed.

Tomb Raider (2018)

Roar Uthaug's reboot cast Alicia Vikander as a young Lara and Walton Goggins as the villain Mathias Vogel, with Rhianna Pratchett among its writers. It borrows elements of Tomb Raider (2013), the game's origin story, as GamesRadar+ notes, where the Jolie films adapt no game. Warner Bros. released it on Mar 16, 2018; it took only $58.3 million in the US but $275.0 million worldwide, the most of the three, on a $94 million budget.

What happened to Tomb Raider 2 with Alicia Vikander?

MGM set Misha Green, creator of Lovecraft Country, to direct a sequel with Vikander in January 2021, produced by Graham King's GK Films; Ben Wheatley had been attached earlier. The film never got made: MGM lost the rights after not committing to a sequel by May 2022, Vikander was no longer attached, and studios began bidding for the license, PC Gamer reported in July 2022, citing The Wrap.

Will there be a new Tomb Raider movie?

None is announced as of Nov 2, 2026. The Tomb Raider pact between Crystal Dynamics and Amazon MGM Studios, through Story Kitchen's first-look deal, covers more series and films, but the only production under way is the Prime Video series with Sophie Turner. A January 2023 report that Amazon bought the Tomb Raider rights for about $600 million was never confirmed.

Where to watch the Tomb Raider movies

In the US, as GamesRadar+ reported on Mar 30, 2026, the two Jolie films were free on Pluto TV and to rent on Prime Video, and the 2018 film was free on Tubi and The Roku Channel and on Hulu. Streaming catalogs change often and differ by country.
