Enemies

The 1996 Tomb Raider's enemies are animals in Peru and Greece (bats, wolves, bears, raptors, a T. rex, lions, gorillas, crocodiles, rats, panthers), then mummies and Atlantean mutants, with bosses Larson, Pierre, three henchmen, the Torso and Natla. Legacy of Atlantis brings back the Peru animals and adds Natla's mercenaries.

The enemies of the 1996 Tomb Raider are mostly animals at first and monsters at the end: bats, wolves, bears, velociraptors and a Tyrannosaurus rex in Peru; lions, gorillas, crocodiles and rats in Greece; panthers and mummies in Egypt; then Atlantean mutants, a doppelganger and the giant Torso in Atlantis. The human enemies are bosses: Larson, Pierre DuPont, three henchmen in Natla's Mines and Natla herself. This list comes from Stella's Tomb Raider Site, level by level. Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis brings back the five Peru creatures and adds human mercenaries, as shown before its Feb 12, 2027 release.

Kill counts tell the story of the pace. Palace Midas has the most in the main game, 43, all of them animals; Natla's Mines has 3, all human. GameSpot's 1996 review complained that the animals "seem to be on a polygon fast".

Animals

Bats and wolves open the game in Caves, which has 7 bats, 6 wolves and a bear; City of Vilcabamba alone has 11 wolves and 16 bats, plus 2 bears. Velociraptors come in The Lost Valley and Tomb of Qualopec. In Greece, lions, gorillas and crocodiles take over; Colosseum has 12 lions, 6 gorillas, 5 bats and 4 crocodiles. Rats appear in Palace Midas and the flooded Cistern. Egypt's panthers come in numbers: 9 in City of Khamoon, four of them at once in the cat temple. Josh Strife Plays' clips on this page show the 1996 PlayStation version.

The T. rex

The Lost Valley holds the game's one Tyrannosaurus rex. The T. rex appears in Tomb Raider, Tomb Raider 2, Tomb Raider 3 and Tomb Raider: Anniversary, and its bite is an instant death, Crystal Dynamics notes. In 1996 it comes out of darkness; PC Gamer felt the brighter jungle of Tomb Raider I-III Remastered weakened its reveal from "the inky void". In Legacy of Atlantis the fight is now a chase across the level, and the design director says simply shooting it will not work.

Mummies and Atlanteans

Mummies guard the tombs: one near Qualopec's throne, then 9 in Obelisk of Khamoon, some woken when Lara climbs stairs or hangs from a ledge. Two Atlantean centaur statues come to life at the entrance of Tomb of Tihocan. From Sanctuary of the Scion on, Natla's Atlantean mutants take over: running ones, winged fliers and catlike ones. They rush at Lara or shoot fireballs and darts, and their bodies explode when they die, which can hurt her. In Atlantis, they hatch from incubators in the walls.

Bosses

Boss Where How it ends
Larson Tomb of Qualopec, then Sanctuary of the Scion Ambushes Lara after the first Scion piece; beaten again in the Scion room
Pierre DuPont St. Francis' Folly, Colosseum, Cistern; killed in Tomb of Tihocan Drops his magnums and the second Scion piece
The Cowboy Natla's Mines Drops the magnums
The Skater Boy Natla's Mines, the skate park Drops the Uzis
The bald henchman Natla's Mines, outside the pyramid Drops a shotgun
The doppelganger Atlantis Lured into lava; it cannot be shot dead
The Torso The Great Pyramid Shot down while Lara avoids its grab
Natla The Great Pyramid Two phases, winged then on foot

Crystal Dynamics notes the Torso is sometimes called Adam, a name from the official Japanese strategy guide, and that fans call the doppelganger "Bacon Lara". The three Natla's Mines henchmen have no names in any source we accept, so this viki uses Stella's descriptions. In Remastered, bosses get health bars.

Enemies in Legacy of Atlantis

What the makers have shown, as of Nov 2, 2026, before release:

  • Peru: wolves, bats, bears, velociraptors and the T-Rex return. The raptors have feathers that come off as damage, the bear fight is now about movement, and a collapsing bridge followed by a wolf ambush returns, reimagined. The clip is ENFANT TERRIBLE's upload of the Gamescom 2026 demo, with the developers on the new raptors.
  • Packs: wolves and raptors change behavior as the pack shrinks, and the last one goes "berserk". Bats now swarm instead of coming one at a time, GamesRadar+ reports from Gamescom.
  • Greece: a leopard that hides in shadows, grass and holes Lara cannot enter, and crocodiles that move between land and water, "unlike the crocodiles of the original". The clip is IGN's Sep 2026 "Creatures of Greece" trailer, with the developers.
  • Mercenaries: a new enemy type, human soldiers of Natla's faction with assault rifles, shotguns and sniper rifles, introduced in that order.
  • Egypt: "the turning point" toward the supernatural, with crawling cat mummies that throw fire and explode if Lara stands still, a mummy from a dropped sarcophagus, flying creatures and hybrid mythic creatures.
  • Not shown: any boss besides the T-Rex, the Atlantean mutants, the doppelganger, the Torso, or the island at all.

The Steam page sums the roster up as "savage wildlife, mercenaries, and mythological creatures". See What's New in Legacy of Atlantis.
