What's New in Legacy of Atlantis
Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis keeps the 1996 game's story and four regions but opens its rooms into semi-connected spaces and adds a grapple, Survivor-style climbing, a dodge-based shooter, crafting, a skill tree, an optional hint scanner, separate puzzle and combat difficulty, new puzzles in Egypt and new creatures.
Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis keeps the 1996 game's story, its route through Peru, Greece, Egypt and Atlantis, and its famous set pieces, and changes nearly everything about how they play. The makers say it opens the original's self-contained rooms into semi-connected environments, gives Lara the Survivor trilogy's climbing and a new grapple, turns combat into a modern third-person shooter with a dodge, replaces medipacks with crafting, adds a skill tree and an optional hint scanner, and lets puzzle and combat difficulty be set apart. Every change below is from the makers or from press who saw pre-release builds in June or August 2026, labeled as such, as of Nov 2, 2026. The finished game may differ.

The 1996 side is covered level by level on Tomb Raider Levels, Controls and Movement, Weapons and Enemies.
Structure and world
The biggest change is the shape of the levels. Where the original moved Lara from one sealed room to the next, the remake opens those spaces up to be explored and approached from new angles. Greece is more vertical and interconnected than Peru, and at St. Francis' Folly the player now picks which of the four champions' tombs to take first; Epps's goal was traversable grandeur. Peru's Vilcabamba and the Tomb of Qualopec are expanded into a larger Atlantean story about creation, the elements and the Scion, with scannable Inca documents and carvings closer to real Inca culture. In Egypt, Lara finds the leftovers of robbers who reached the tombs before her. Peru also opens in snow, with an ice slide, before the jungle. Nick930 compares the Dec 2025 trailer with the 1996 game.
Traversal
Lara's moves now combine the original's jumps with the Survivor trilogy's climbing and wall scramble, and she sprints. The new grapple tool pulls objects, solves puzzles, and lets her climb and rappel. Big gaps need a sprint and end in a saving grab, a change the Sixth Axis noted after the Gamescom demo. Surfaces carry markings and color to show where to go, and Siqueira says moves chain together for speedrunners. The clip is IGN's Jun 2026 first preview, from a pre-release demo.
Combat and progression
The remake is built as a modern third-person shooter with aim assist and target snapping, though not a cover shooter. Focus Mode is new: dodges build Focus, more for well-timed ones, and spending it sets off a slow-motion acrobatic shot. Natla's human mercenaries, armed in turn with assault rifles, shotguns and sniper rifles, are a new enemy type. Weapons beyond the pistols are found in the world, the shotgun first in Greece, and can be upgraded in rate of fire and accuracy.
A skill tree spends points on traversal, combat or survivability; one skill shown raises fire rate by 10 percent, and Epps said that growing Lara's power in the Survivor games made him more engaged. Crafting replaces the 1996 medipacks: herbs become tonics and balms, and cooked dishes give buffs, such as an Explorer's Stew that reduces trap damage. Siqueira said a medbag lying in an untouched temple breaks immersion. Both additions drew a negative reaction from fans, as GamesRadar+ and Kotaku reported, and Epps answered that a player can use the twin pistols the entire way.
Puzzles and hints
The puzzles are rebuilt, and in Egypt they are new. The Egypt team says it recreated new puzzles centered on the Egyptian gods to remove a lot of the original's repetition, among them a scales puzzle in a temple to Anubis and an Osiris trial. Other puzzles named include a waterfall route to Qualopec's tomb, light beams, a quipu cord puzzle rebuilt with levers and the Lost Valley's cog puzzle, which the June 2026 trailer showed. Siqueira says good puzzles took 6 to 8 revisions and hard ones 10 to 12.
The 1996 game had no pointers, objective markers or clues. The remake gives hints through Lara's remarks and an optional 3D laser scanner, and the makers stress that all scanner hints are optional. The scanner also reads lore from statues and relics. The clip is GameRiot's report from the hands-off Gamescom demo.
Difficulty
Players can raise the guidance and set puzzle and combat difficulty separately, so a player can keep hard puzzles and easy fights or the reverse. Kerslake spoke of a difficulty for the modern player shortly after the reveal, as 80 Level reported. The names of the modes and the full accessibility options have not been published as of Nov 2, 2026.
Creatures and set pieces
The Lost Valley T. rex is now a chase across the level rather than an arena fight, and Epps says simply shooting it will not work. The raptors are feathered, with feathers that come off as damage, the bear fight is about movement, and packs of wolves and raptors change behavior as they shrink. The collapsing bridge and wolf ambush come back, reworked. Bats now swarm instead of coming one at a time. In Greece, the leopard hides in shadow and grass, and crocodiles move between land and water, unlike the 1996 crocodiles. Egypt brings fire-throwing cat mummies that explode if Lara stands still, flying creatures and hybrid mythic beasts. IGN says it had no footage of the new chase, so its T. rex shots are from Tomb Raider: Anniversary.
In St. Francis' Folly, the Gamescom demo of the Sword of Damocles room showed dodge prompts as the swords fall, spikes spread out across the floor, a rethought door puzzle, and swords that can be shot down. With a skill that extends shot range, Lara can shoot the swords down and hop between them, the one shown case of a skill getting round a puzzle.
Secrets and outfits
All of the original 1996 secrets return, and many new ones have been added. In the 1996 game secrets rewarded ammunition and medipacks; in the remake, secrets and relics unlock outfits, and finding the Athenian Owl relic in the Gamescom demo unlocked Lara's Tomb Raider: Legend outfit. The 1996 counts are on Secrets.
Story and characters
The story is expanded with deeper connections that bridge Lara's defining adventure to her future. The remake places itself after the Survivor trilogy in one timeline, so its Lara is the reboot's Lara with more adventures behind her, and its Natla is the CEO of Natla Technologies, who tries to recruit Lara and is refused. Larson's full name is given as Larson Conway, his partner is Pierre Dupont, and Qualopec is an Atlantean who helped the Inca and later controlled the dinosaurs. Lara meets unnamed historical faces in Greece. The cast is on Tomb Raider Characters.
What has not been shown
Nothing of the Mediterranean island or Atlantis has been shown as of Nov 2, 2026, and no official text names the 1996 levels Natla's Mines, Atlantis or The Great Pyramid. Whether Croft Manor's training level returns, whether the centaurs fight Lara, and which bosses follow the T. rex are not known. The game itself is on Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, and what the press thought of the changes is on Legacy of Atlantis Previews.
