St. Francis' Folly
St. Francis' Folly is level 5 of the 1996 Tomb Raider, the first in Greece: a tall central shaft whose four rooms, Neptune, Atlas, Thor and Damocles, each hide a key for the exit, with 4 secrets. Legacy of Atlantis showed its reworked Damocles room at Gamescom 2026.
St. Francis' Folly is level 5 of the 1996 Tomb Raider and the first level in Greece: a huge central structure six floors high, with four rooms named for Neptune, Atlas, Thor and Damocles, each a trap-filled challenge that ends in a key, and the four keys together open the exit at the bottom. It has 4 secrets, 19 pickups and 23 kills (lions, gorillas, crocodiles and bats), by Stella's count, and it is where Pierre DuPont, Natla's second henchman, first shows up and cannot yet be killed. Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis keeps the four rooms and showed its new Sword of Damocles room first. The clip is Josh Strife Plays on the 1996 PlayStation version.

Why Lara goes to Greece
After beating Larson in Peru, Lara breaks into Natla Technologies and finds a prayer book by a monk named Brother Herbert, dated 1573, pointing to the tomb of Tihocan under St. Francis' Folly. Tihocan, one of the three rulers of Atlantis, lies there with his piece of The Scion, guarded by two Atlantean centaurs. The Folly is the way in; the tomb itself is four levels later, in Tomb of Tihocan.
Walkthrough
The order below follows Stella's Remastered walkthrough.
- The long room with tall blocks. Shoot the two lions from the low platforms by the entrance. Push the movable block onto the near omega tile, then twice onto the far one, to open a door on the landing; push it once more beside the tall tan block, which is the way up to the first secret.
- The gorilla room. Kill the gorillas from the doorway and pull the switch that opens the door at the far end of the big room.
- Pierre. He appears among the tall blocks. He cannot die here: hit him with the pistols and break his line of sight until he runs off.
- The slide and the flooded passage. A long slope leads down to the second secret; the room opposite holds a crocodile and the switch that drains the passage to the third.
- The central structure. Four doors on four floors of the six-floor room each lead to a challenge and a key. Stella takes them top down:
- Neptune (6th floor): a deep pool with a current. Swim down, pull the lever that stops it, and take the key before Lara runs out of air.
- Atlas (4th floor): kill the gorilla, then outrun the boulder down the hallway to a safe alcove. The key is on the ledge above.
- Thor (3rd floor): a room of lightning and a hammer that drops on a pressure pad. Cross carefully, set off the hammer and step clear, then take the key.
- Damocles (2nd floor): a room of hanging swords that fall as Lara passes. Step on the pressure pad, climb the pedestal and take the key, then walk out slowly, since a falling sword hurts.
- The fourth secret. On the Thor floor, a pressure pad across the gap from the switch opens a timed door on the bottom floor, which closes about 17 seconds after Lara steps off. Falls on the way down cost health, so heal first.
- The exit. Pierre comes back after the Thor room and again after Damocles. Return to the bottom floor and put the four keys in the locks on the east wall.
Secrets
| Secret | Where | Reward |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | A room of angled blocks, reached by climbing the movable block and pillars in the long room, then a jump combination | Large medi pack and shotgun shells |
| 2 | A small room at the bottom of the long slide, across a gap | Small medi pack and shotgun shells (or the shotgun if Lara has none) |
| 3 | The flooded passage, drained by the switch, up through a ceiling opening | Shotgun shells (or the shotgun) |
| 4 | Behind the timed door on the bottom floor, opened from the Thor floor | Large medi pack and magnum clips |

A player who missed the shotgun in The Lost Valley finds it here in place of shells. The magnum clips wait for the magnums, which Lara finds in the next level.
Original and Remastered
Tomb Raider I-III Remastered keeps the 1996 rooms. Its April 2024 update gave the Thor room new lighting. Stella lists the Remastered achievements tied to the rooms, among them one for setting off all 19 swords of Damocles and one for surfacing in Neptune's pool on the last breath.
St. Francis' Folly in Legacy of Atlantis
Amazon Game Studios calls Greece "the incredible second level of the game", which suggests one large Greece level where the 1996 game had five, though the full level list is not published as of Nov 2, 2026. Its developers describe the Folly's vault as a vertical chamber with four chambers dedicated to Greek champions, and say the player picks which of the four tombs to take first. The in-world travel piece calls it a Byzantine monastery outside Athens, closed for decades. GamesBeat placed it beneath the catacombs of a church.
The Gamescom demo in late August 2026 was the Sword of Damocles room, shown hands-off in a pre-alpha build. Per The Sixth Axis, the falling swords now trigger dodge prompts, the floor spikes are spread out, the door puzzle is rethought, and the swords can be shot down. Kotaku reported that a skill extending Lara's shot range lets her shoot the swords down and hop between them, the one shown case of a skill bypassing a puzzle. The Sixth Axis also reports that finding the Athenian Owl relic unlocks Lara's Tomb Raider: Legend outfit. Greece adds a leopard that hides in shadows and human mercenaries of Natla's faction, and the shotgun turns up there; see What's New in Legacy of Atlantis and Legacy of Atlantis Previews. The clip is ENFANT TERRIBLE's upload of that demo.
