Atlantis
Atlantis is the lost civilization behind Tomb Raider's story and the last region of the 1996 game, played in three levels: Natla's Mines, Atlantis and The Great Pyramid. Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis calls it a mysterious Mediterranean island and has not shown it as of Nov 2, 2026.
In Tomb Raider, Atlantis is the ancient civilization whose three rulers made and split the Scion, and the fourth and last region of the 1996 game: Lara reaches its buried Great Pyramid through Natla's Mines (level 13), crosses the living, fleshy halls of the Atlantis level (14), and fights Natla in The Great Pyramid (15). Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, out Feb 12, 2027, takes its name from it and describes the last region only as "a mysterious Mediterranean island shrouded in myth". As of Nov 2, 2026 nothing of that island or of Atlantis itself has been shown. The clip shows the 1996 PlayStation version.

Atlantis in the 1996 story
Three rulers, Natla, Qualopec and Tihocan, governed Atlantis together and shared the Scion (Crystal Dynamics). Natla broke the "three-bond of consent" of the Triumvirate, used the Scion to breed mutants and turned a sacred pyramid into "a factory of aberrations"; the other two froze her. Afterward a meteor and tidal waves struck Atlantis and covered the Great Pyramid (Crystal Dynamics). Qualopec and Tihocan were entombed far away, in Peru and Greece, which is why their tombs, and the Scion's pieces, are there. When Natla woke in the 20th century she built Natla Technologies as a front for mining toward the buried pyramid. See Jacqueline Natla. The clip shows the 1996 PlayStation version.
The three Atlantis levels
| Level | What happens | Secrets |
|---|---|---|
| Natla's Mines (13) | Lara loses her weapons, wins them back from the Cowboy, the Skater Boy and the bald henchman, and finds the Pyramid Key | 3 |
| Atlantis Level (14) | Mutants hatch from the walls; a doppelganger copies Lara's moves; the level ends at the Scion | 3 |
| The Great Pyramid (15) | The giant Torso, then Natla in two phases, then the escape | 3 |

The mines hide the pyramid's entrance, half covered by the mountain (Crystal Dynamics). Inside, Crystal Dynamics describes Atlantis as "gruesome; a mix of stone, pools of lava and flesh", with walls that pulse and give birth to monsters. Lara must climb to the top of the pyramid and destroy the Scion so Natla can never use it again. The doppelganger that mirrors her, which fans nicknamed "Bacon Lara", can be beaten only by a trap (Stella's Tomb Raider Site). In The Great Pyramid the legless Torso drags itself out of its pod, Natla, fused with part of a winged Atlantean, fights first flying and then on the ground, and Lara escapes the exploding pyramid; the game ends as she climbs out and slides down. The clip shows the 1996 PlayStation version.
Enemies of Atlantis
The region trades animals for Natla's creations: Atlanteans that run at Lara or throw darts and fireballs, winged mutants, centaurs and catlike mutants, whose bodies explode when killed and can hurt her (Crystal Dynamics). The Atlantis level alone has 32 kills, by Stella's count. Natla's Mines, by contrast, has only the three henchmen. All of them are on Enemies.
Back to Atlantis: Unfinished Business
The 1998 expansion returns twice to Atlantis. In Atlantean Stronghold and The Hive Lara goes back to destroy Natla's remaining mutants in their hatcheries, escaping at the end through a gold door that stays open about 13 seconds (Stella's Tomb Raider Site). Tomb Raider I-III Remastered plays these two first, as the developers intended. See Unfinished Business.
Atlantis in Legacy of Atlantis
The remake's store page lists four places, the last of them "a mysterious Mediterranean island shrouded in myth", and its title puts Atlantis in front. That is all the makers have said. As of Nov 2, 2026:
- No trailer, mini-documentary or preview has shown the island or Atlantis; the demos covered Peru's Lost Valley and Greece, and the official episodes reached Egypt.
- No official text names the 1996 game's Natla's Mines, Atlantis or The Great Pyramid levels, and the complete level list is not published (Amazon Game Studios).
- Bosses beyond the T. rex have not been named. Egypt is called "the turning point" toward the supernatural, with fire-throwing cat mummies and hybrid mythic creatures; nothing has been said of Atlantis's own enemies.
- The free Mediterranean Wetsuit Outfit, for linking an Amazon Games iD, is the one item named for that sea (Amazon Game Studios).
Whether the island is Atlantis itself or the way to it, and whether the fleshy look of 1996 returns, is not known. The rest of what the remake changes is on What's New in Legacy of Atlantis.
