What is in Tomb Raider I-III Remastered?

Three games and three expansions: the 1996 game with Unfinished Business, Tomb Raider 2 with Golden Mask, and Tomb Raider 3 with The Lost Artifact, plus their secret levels. The Unfinished Business levels reached consoles for the first time here, and the collection plays them in the order the developers first intended, the Atlantis pair first, per Stella's Tomb Raider Site. Aspyr and Crystal Dynamics announced it in a Nintendo Direct on Sep 14, 2023.

What changed from the originals?

  • Graphics you can toggle. Updated character models, 3D pickups where the originals used flat sprites, and baked and real-time lighting; one button returns the original look.
  • Two control schemes. Classic tank controls or a modern scheme, plus camera lock-on.
  • Photo Mode with 21 poses.
  • Achievements and trophies, over 200, one for locking Winston in the freezer.
  • Boss health bars and a Restart Level option in the passport menu.
  • New Game+ after one playthrough: no medi packs, tougher enemies, saving only at blue save crystals.

The levels themselves are the same, with touches such as openings that now act as visible light sources and more plants. Fans of the series worked on it: Timur Gagiev, maker of the OpenLara engine, was its technical director.

How do the controls work?

The classic controls are the 1996 ones: Up runs, Down hops back, Left and Right turn on the spot, and Walk stops Lara at edges. The modern scheme moves her in the direction you push, like a current third-person game. Reviewers did not like it. Kotaku said the modern controls lose sidestep and turning on the spot, which the grid-based levels need, and the remaster also changed the original's side-stroke in water, which used the sidestep buttons. Crystal Dynamics' own advice is that each scheme takes time to adjust to, and that the modern one allows moves the tank controls cannot. Players who want exact jumps can stay with classic. Reviews

Critics split between praise for the preservation and complaints about the remaster's limits. On Metacritic it holds 75 on PS5 from 34 critics, 75 on Xbox Series X, 73 on PC and 71 on Switch; OpenCritic's Top Critic Average is 75, with 57% of 97 critics recommending it, as of Nov 1, 2026.

PC Gamer gave it 78 and called it "the definitive version of these games", praising the instant graphics switch while faulting flat textures, the camera and spongy bosses. Kotaku called it "a colossal mess" as a remaster, for its controls, missing PC video options and lack of autosaves, but valued it as preservation. Players were warmer: 83% of 3,636 Steam reviews were positive on Nov 1, 2026. No official sales figure has been published as of Nov 2, 2026; see Tomb Raider Sales.

The content warning and the patch-notes controversy

Two disputes followed launch. The first was a notice shown at first boot, in which Crystal Dynamics says the games contain "offensive depictions of people and cultures" rooted in racial and ethnic prejudice, presented unaltered so their harm can be acknowledged. Kotaku called it "a spectacularly disingenuous message", since nothing in the marketing mentioned the content before purchase. PC Gamer's review, which said these depictions were at their worst "nothing less than racist", was corrected after first saying the remaster did not acknowledge them; the statement appears briefly at the first boot only.

The second was about the patch notes. Aspyr's update of Apr 11, 2024 listed 155 fixes but did not mention that the Lara Croft pinup posters in The Lost Artifact's Sleeping with the Fishes level were gone from the remastered graphics, though still there in the original graphics, Kotaku reported on Apr 22, 2024. Players called it censorship, and a NexusMods user released a mod to restore them. Crystal Dynamics had promoted the posters a week after launch. Aspyr said on Apr 23 that they had been "inadvertently removed in the HD version" during texture work, and Update 3 on Jun 6, 2024 brought them back: its notes say the posters "are now appearing in HD mode."

Updates and Challenge Mode

Update 3 also added an Outfit Selector and water caustics missing from the first two games, and Update 1.2 added a "Bloody T-Rex" Lara outfit to Photo Mode. On Mar 12, 2026 a free Challenge Mode arrived: replay any level with modifiers for health, damage and enemies, earn 10 outfits and 15 achievements, or use it with no modifiers as a level select. The same day the collection came to Switch 2, iOS and Android, where the first level of each game is free.

Editions and price

It launched digitally at $29.99. Physical editions followed on Sep 24, 2024: $34.99, a $54.99 Deluxe for PS5 and Switch, and a $199.99 Limited Run Games Collector's Edition, as announced in May 2024. Steam also sells a Tomb Raider I-VI Remastered Bundle with Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered, and on Nov 1, 2026 the collection was 80% off on Steam until Nov 6. All stores are on Where to Buy Tomb Raider Games.
