Tomb Raider (2013)

Tomb Raider (2013) is Crystal Dynamics' reboot, Lara Croft's origin story on a stormbound island, published by Square Enix on Mar 5, 2013 with Camilla Luddington as Lara. It scored 86 to 87 on Metacritic and had sold 11 million copies by 2018, though Square Enix first called its sales below target.

Tomb Raider (2013) is the reboot that made Lara Croft a survivor: developed by Crystal Dynamics and published by Square Enix on Mar 5, 2013 for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC, it tells her origin story, shipwrecked on her first expedition on an island where she stops a cult tied to the Sun Queen Himiko. It is one of the best-reviewed games in the series, at 87 on Metacritic for PS3 and 86 for Xbox 360 and PC, and Square Enix later said it had sold 11 million copies. Camilla Luddington played Lara, as she did in the two sequels, Rise of the Tomb Raider and Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Its Definitive Edition is still sold on modern consoles, Switch 2 and phones.

What is Tomb Raider (2013) about?

A young Lara joins an expedition looking for Yamatai, the lost kingdom of the shaman queen Himiko, and is shipwrecked on a mysterious island in the Dragon's Triangle off Japan, as Stella's Tomb Raider Site sets out the opening. Her mentor Conrad Roth, the man Crystal Dynamics says handed down her dual pistols, leads the expedition. The island's cult and the queen's legend turn out to be linked, and the game is about Lara surviving both. Crystal Dynamics calls it the story of "her development from a young woman into a hardened survivor."

How the reboot plays

It throws out the classic games' structure. There is no health bar, Lara recovers over time, and a bow, an axe, a pistol, a rifle and a shotgun come one by one as she scavenges, per Stella's guide. Base camps let you fast travel and spend experience on skills and weapon upgrades. The island opens up as she gains gear, so earlier areas can be revisited, and optional side tombs and collectibles sit off the main path. Stella's walkthrough splits it into 29 areas, from Scavenger's Den to Chasm Ziggurat. There is also an online multiplayer mode.

Camilla Luddington

Square Enix named Camilla Luddington "the voice and performance actress" for Lara on Jun 26, 2012, after an international talent search in Europe and the US; her credits then included Californication and True Blood. She played Lara in all three Survivor games. Alix Wilton Regan takes over in Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis and Tomb Raider: Catalyst; the whole list is on Lara Croft Voice Actors.

Reception

Critics welcomed it. Game Developer's roundup at launch put it at 86 on Metacritic, with IGN at 9.1 out of 10 (Keza MacDonald called it a reboot "both authentic and hugely exciting"), GameSpot at 8.5 and Eurogamer at 8. Eurogamer's Ellie Gibson was the most doubtful: she found the old Tomb Raider squeezed by collectibles, upgrades and gore, but liked the new Lara, more human than before. On Steam, the Game of the Year edition was Very Positive, 94% of 53,737 reviews, on Nov 1, 2026.

Sales

At first Square Enix was disappointed. In March 2013 it said it expected 3.4 million units sold, not counting digital, and that its big console games had "failed to meet each target" despite strong reviews. The game kept selling: by 2018 Square Enix put it at 11 million, and in 2022 the three Survivor games together had sold 38 million, about 43% of the series' 88 million. Crystal Dynamics has not said which Tomb Raider is the best seller; see Tomb Raider Sales.

Versions and where to play

All three Survivor games come together as Tomb Raider: Definitive Survivor Trilogy (2021). Where it falls in Lara's timeline, before the 1996 story, is on Tomb Raider Games in Order, and Where to Start with Tomb Raider weighs it against the classic games as a first game.
