Tomb Raider Chronicles
Tomb Raider Chronicles (Tomb Raider 5, 2000) is Core Design's fifth game, four short flashback adventures told by Lara Croft's friends at her memorial after The Last Revelation. It scored 57 to 63 on Metacritic, and its PC version came with the Tomb Raider level editor.
Tomb Raider Chronicles is the fifth Tomb Raider game, released in November 2000 by Core Design and Eidos Interactive for PlayStation, PC and Dreamcast, and it is built as four short stories: with Lara Croft "missing in Egypt - presumed dead" after The Last Revelation, her friends gather for a memorial and remember adventures nobody had heard of. Critics found it thin, at 63 on Metacritic for PlayStation, 57 for PC and 59 for Dreamcast, and at 11 hours for the main story it is the shortest classic Tomb Raider. Its lasting gift to fans was the level editor packed with the PC version.

What is Tomb Raider Chronicles about?
Core Design's own press release of Aug 22, 2000 sets the scene a few days after The Last Revelation: her body has not been found, and after the service Jean Yves, the butler Winston and the family priest, Father Dunstan, retire to Croft Manor and recall her past. Each memory is a playable episode, and because they are flashbacks, their stories fall inside the years of the earlier games, not after them. Lara's fate is left open for The Angel of Darkness.
The four episodes
| Episode | Levels | Lara's goal |
|---|---|---|
| Rome | Streets of Rome, Trajan's Markets, The Colosseum | The Philosopher's Stone |
| Russian submarine | The Base, The Submarine, Deepsea Dive, Sinking Submarine | The Spear of Destiny |
| Ireland | Gallows Tree, Labyrinth, Old Mill | A brush with the supernatural, as a teenage Lara |
| VCI Headquarters | 13th Floor, Escape with the Iris, Red Alert! | The Iris artifact |

Core's release describes the submarine as a German U-boat and gives each episode its own style: the Irish levels, played as the 16-year-old Lara, rely on cunning rather than weapons, the Rome levels are classic tomb raiding, and the tower block asks for stealth with guidance from Zip over the radio. The game's 36 secrets are golden roses, and finding them all unlocks a Special Features menu of design storyboards, per Stella.
What changed since The Last Revelation
Not much under the hood: the engine is pretty much the same, in Stella's words. Core's release lists a sniper rifle and a grappling hook gun, tightropes and swinging bars, enemies who react to sound so Lara can sneak up and knock them out, a search action for drawers and files, and two new outfits, a catsuit with headset and a camouflage suit.
The level editor
The PC version shipped with the series' own tools. Core's release says the PC format "includes the highly acclaimed Tomb Raider level editor," letting players build and play their own levels as the team did. Stella adds that it came on a separate CD with the PC and Mac versions, and that console owners can download it but only build levels for PC or Mac.
Reception
Chronicles was the lowest-rated Core game before The Angel of Darkness: 63, 57 and 59 on Metacritic across its three platforms, with a user score of 6.9. On Steam it was Mostly Positive, 73% of 786 reviews, on Nov 1, 2026, the weakest of the classic games there after The Angel of Darkness. No sales figure for it alone has been published; see Tomb Raider Sales.
