Tomb of Qualopec is level 4 of the 1996 Tomb Raider and the last in Peru: Lara enters the tomb through a cave behind a waterfall, raises three gates with switches hidden in three themed rooms, takes the first piece of The Scion from beside Qualopec's throne, and fights Larson at the pool on the way out. It has 3 secrets, 8 pickups and 8 kills (3 raptors, 3 wolves, a mummy and Larson), by Stella's count. It is the game's first level with "tomb" in its name and the first rolling boulder of the series. Who was Qualopec?
In the 1996 game's lore, Qualopec was one of three rulers of Atlantis with Tihocan and Natla, each entrusted with a piece of the Scion. After Natla betrayed them, he went to Peru, died and was entombed in the city of Vilcabamba, his skeleton facing his piece of the Scion with two mummified guards. The level is where the story turns: Larson ambushes Lara after she takes the piece and, beaten, "reveals more than he should", which sends her to Natla Technologies and on to Greece.
Walkthrough
The order below follows Stella's Remastered walkthrough.
- The entrance hall. A large ornate room has three other doorways; three gates block the left one.
- The boulder. Take the ramp straight ahead. After a few steps a gate closes behind Lara and a boulder rolls down. Run (or roll and run) down the ramp and step aside at the bottom.
- The raptors. The wall switch left of that passage opens a door, and two velociraptors charge out.
- The three rooms. A four-way intersection has three side doors marked with a face, a sun and a bird. Each hides one switch that raises one of the three gates:
- Face room: push the movable blocks to open a passage, cross a breakaway tile, and pull the switch by the spike pit.
- Sun room: step into an alcove whose floor breaks, hop back so it collapses, and drop to fight three wolves below. A block in the wall leads to stairs, a medi pack and the second switch.
- Bird room: a switch moves one tall block; climbs and jumps among spikes and blocks lead to the third switch. A third raptor attacks in the hallway afterward.
- The gates. Pass under the three raised gates. A dart trap guards the next corner. The first two secrets are off the stairs here.
- Qualopec's throne. At the top, the mummy beside the throne follows Lara but does not attack. Taking the Scion piece from the pedestal brings the ceiling down: run down the ramp, veer right, and follow the rocky tunnel to the pool.
- Larson. He appears at the pool when Lara jumps in. Shoot him from the doorway, or from the sloping block near the cave opening, until a cutscene plays and the level ends. Get the third secret, in the pool, before beating him.
Secrets
| Secret | Where | Reward |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Step down from the second stair and pull up into the alcove; a room of 8 breakaway tiles over spikes, safe ledge in the far left corner | Shotgun shells |
| 2 | Hang from that room's ledge, move left toward the wall and drop to a safe spot between the spikes | Magnum clips |
| 3 | An underwater tunnel on the east side of Larson's pool, to a small room with air | Large medi pack and magnum clips |

Original and Remastered
Tomb Raider I-III Remastered keeps the layout and adds a health bar for Larson as a boss. Stella's Remastered guide notes its achievements, including one for examining the mummy in the bird room, and the "Deadline" achievement, which asks the player to let Larson kill Lara at least once. Save crystals appear only in New Game+.
Qualopec in Legacy of Atlantis
Amazon Game Studios lists the Tomb of Qualopec among the remake's Peru areas. Its developers describe Qualopec as "an Atlantean who helped the Inca and later controlled the dinosaurs", and say his tomb and Vilcabamba are expanded into a larger Atlantean story. The puzzle article names a waterfall traversal puzzle to Qualopec's tomb. Larson returns, now voiced by Bradley Snedeker; in the remake he contacts Lara to begin the search for the Scion. Whether he is still fought at this tomb is not shown as of Nov 2, 2026. See Larson Conway and What's New in Legacy of Atlantis.
